Glenn Aster Ward, 73 of Grundy, VA, passed away on Tuesday September 26, 2023, in Colonial Heights, TN, where he had made his home for the last several months surrounded by his family.

Born July 2, 1950, in Grundy, Virginia, he was the son of the late John William and Ollie Blankenship Ward.

He was a disabled coal miner and a member of the UMWA, an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, bee-keeping, gardening and grafting fruit trees, watching Nascar, and supporting local sport teams especially football and basketball. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. He was of the Christian faith and a member of Cross View Church of Christ.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Sharon K. Payne Ward, his siblings: Carlis, Elmer, Leonard, Jimmy, Dewey, Rex, Fred, Earl, Kirby, Edward, Carrie, Gertrude, Nellie, and Victoria Ward. Velma Crouse, Mary Cartmell, Caroline Randolph, Gracie Rife, Jean Young, Shirley Merritt, and Stella Mae Baker.

Those left to honor his memory include his daughter, Stephanie Shanks and husband Terry of Colonial Heights, TN; Jonathan Ward and wife Maddy of Charleston, SC; Siblings, Dorothy Stiltner of Grundy, VA, Perry Ward and wife Debbie of Louisa, VA; his grandchildren, Terrin Jo Shanks of Sneedville, TN, Joseph Shanks of Church Hill, TN; great-grandchildren, Tavin and Finley; his canine companions, Dolly and Coco; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a host of friends and walking buddy, Jerry Shortridge.

Funeral services for Glen Aster Ward will be conducted at the Virginia Funeral Home Chapel, Grundy, VA, Friday, September 29, 2023, with Hobert Kennedy officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 6:00 P.M. A UMWA service will be held at 7:00 P.M.

The family wishes to thank Amedysis Hospice, Dr. Clint Surtherland, and the physicians and staff of Ballad Cancer Center of Bristol.

In honor of Aster’s wishes his body will be cremated.
