Gail Marilyn Hoopes passed away on October 1, 2023, surrounded by her loved ones.

Gail was born in Detroit to William and Clare Sturgeon on July 20, 1937. She shared great memories of a childhood spent with her older brother Bill, whom she adored and who preceded her in death. She embraced each day with enthusiasm and gratitude, reminding all to cherish life's simple pleasures.

She graduated from Denby High School and the University of Michigan where she met the love of her life, Charles Hoopes. They were married on August 30, 1957, and settled in Ann Arbor after graduation. They epitomized a couple in love with a storybook marriage filled with affection, laughter, and adventure through their 55 years of commitment.

Gail’s unwavering devotion to her family and her boundless enthusiasm for life touched the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. After graduating from U of M, she briefly taught elementary school. She moved to a career at the U of M Dental School as a coordinator of dentistry for children with special needs. She and her husband retired early to travel the world. They visited every continent, often for six weeks at a time. She recently shared that a cruise around Africa was her favorite.

Gail had to keep her hands busy. She loved to knit, cross stitch, quilt, and cook. She had the most fabulous gardens and read voraciously. She stayed current with technology and shared her expertise with friends on Marco Island or at the Cedars of Dexter. She made sure to keep her kids current on all things Apple.

Marco Island, Florida was their winter happy place. What were brief visits to see their son Bill in Naples turned into six months of residency. They happily spent six months of the year between Naples and Ann Arbor to spend time with each set of grandchildren.

Gail was a beacon of grace and a cherished center of our family. She beamed with pride at the achievements and milestones of her children and grandchildren. Her husband, Charles, preceded her in death. She is survived by her children, Charles (Anita Monical), Julie (Vahan) Agbabian, William (Sandra) Hoopes; her grandchildren, Ani, Alexander, Galvin, William, Wellsley, and Martin; and brother and sister-in-law, Bruce, and Bev; along with nieces, nephews, and many lifelong friends.

Throughout her long and beautiful life, she touched the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her life was a testament to unwavering faith, grace, and a profound love that knew no bounds.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, October 5, 2023 at the Nie Family Funeral Home – 3767 W. Liberty Rd, Ann Arbor from 5-8pm. The funeral service will be held on Friday, October 6, 2023 at the University Lutheran Chapel - 1511 Washtenaw Ave, Ann Arbor at 11am. A private burial will be held at Glen Eden Memorial Park, Livonia.

Her faith was the cornerstone of her existence. She found solace in her beliefs and shared her Christianity with those around her, inspiring us to find our own path to grace and spiritual fulfillment. She leaves behind a legacy of peace and joy that will continue to guide us through the journey of life. She will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her, but her memory will live on in our hearts forever.
